CATALIN DRAGOMIR FROM IBNA, ROMANIA VISITED FINS

The delegate visited Feed to Food Center as partner responsible within the FP7 Feed to Food project and also as scientific director of the National Research-Development Institute for Animal Biology and Nutrition (INCDBNA) – in charge with scientific cooperation. The objective of the visit was to identify areas of collaboration, including joint research, in order to reach Feed to Food project objective and initiate a long-term sustainable cooperation between the two institutions.

Within this context, the delegate got acquainted with the facilities built under FP7 Feed to Food project, namely the technological lines for compound feed processing: milling, mixing, conditioning, expanding-extruding, pelleting, drying, cooling, vacuum coating. Also, the delegate together with the Feed to Food team browsed the current research subjects of both institutes and identified the convergence areas and the complementarities in terns of equipments and implemented research methods and in terms of expertise.

Based on the previously identified subjects of collaboration (during the visit of Feed to Food team in Bucharest, December 2009), two experimental design were established in order to organize two joint experiments (one on the effects of feed on rumen microbial proteosynthesis, another on the development of equation of the prediction of local feedstuffs digestibility). Within the first experiment, trials were done using the new equipment, in order to elaborate the experimental feeds that are to be assessed using INCDBNA’s complementary facilities for trials on farm animals.
Briefly the main outcomes of the stage are:

  1. two experimental designs established in detail and two other joint experiments identified (on the relationship feed processing – rumen acidosis and on plant extracts-based feed additives)
  2. convergences and complementarities between Feed to Food Center and INCDBNA were identified and extensively discussed
  3. agreement on long-term collaboration, for adding scientific value to the trials initiated by both institutes: Feed to Food Center will complete the trials on feed processing with the effects on animal metabolism, INCDBNA will get more tailored experimental feeds with the aid of Feed to food facilities
  4. subjects for joint projects identified and discussed. Two potential calls were identified: a FP7 SME-targeted call and a regional call in Vojvodina.
